Since 1929, C Webb & Sons has been more than just a butcher's shop - it's a living legacy, woven into the fabric of our community with a heritage that spans just short of a century. Our story begins with Charles Webb, a dedicated young man who embarked on his butchery career in 1887 under the mentorship of JP Tundley. With a passion for quality meat and an unwavering work ethic, Charles honed his craft, laying the foundation for what would become a family tradition passed down through generations.

A Heritage Built on Tradition, Family, and Craftsmanship
In 1929, driven by a vision of independence and excellence, Charles, with the steadfast support of his daughter Gertrude Webb, opened the first C Webb & Sons shop. Nestled in a location that today houses the local pet shop, this modest establishment marked the beginning of a brand built on integrity, craftsmanship, and family values.

Charles’ Vision: Building a Legacy on Witton Street
As the business flourished, Charles seized the opportunity to expand. In 1936, he purchased 56 Witton Street, relocating the shop to what would become the heart of our operations. Two decades later, in 1956/57, the adjoining premises at 58 Witton Street became available. Charles, always forward-thinking, merged the two spaces, creating the expansive shop that proudly serves our community to this day.

A Family Tradition: Strength, Dedication, and Legacy
Family has always been the cornerstone of C Webb & Sons. Gertrude played a pivotal role alongside her father, balancing family life with business acumen. Her husband, Albert Stubbs, brought discipline and dedication from his time in the Grenadier Guards, joining the business in the mid-1930s before returning to military service during World War II. Despite the challenges of wartime, Gertrude and Charles kept the business thriving, embodying resilience and commitment. After Charles’ passing in 1945, Albert returned from service to continue the family legacy.

Passing the Torch: A New Generation Continues the Legacy
The next generation stepped up with pride and purpose. Anthony, the first son of Gertrude and Albert, joined the family business after completing his national service, dedicating his career until his retirement in 1977. Meanwhile, Chris Stubbs, their second son, began working in the shop straight out of school in 1963, bringing fresh energy and a deep respect for the family's heritage.

A Butcher’s Craft and a Judge’s Honor
Chris not only carried on the butchery tradition but also earned acclaim as a distinguished cattle judge from 1968. His expertise led him to judge at local and county shows, with the honour of judging at the prestigious Welsh Winter Fair five times - a highlight of his judging career. His reputation extended to championships in Birmingham and across local cattle markets, showcasing his unparalleled knowledge and passion for livestock.
Today, C Webb & Sons remains a proud, family-run business, managed by Chris and his dedicated manager, Paul.

Together, they uphold the values instilled by Charles Webb: a commitment to quality, a passion for the craft, and a deep connection to the community we serve.
Our story is more than a timeline; it's a testament to the enduring spirit of family, tradition, and the art of butchery. At C Webb & Sons, every cut tells a story, and every customer is part of our legacy.
